"Anger, especially in the face of injustice, unlocks our empathy." Wow. So true. And what a time for us all to feel angry/empathic. A very interesting perspective. We evolved anger for good reason - it certainly has served as a useful survival tool...
However, I do think the type of or degree to which we feel anger we feel is important too. To carry around anger all the time is certainly not healthy or useful. But to use that anger to challenge an injustice, or for it to nurture into empathy, is of course virtuous. Anger is a useful tool but a dangerous master. If anger does nurture into empathy however, then it becomes something much more profound. I love Thich Nhat Hanh's take on anger:
“In the beginning you may not understand the nature of your anger, or why it has come to be. But if you know how to embrace it with the energy of mindfulness, it will begin to become clear to you.”
"Our attitude is to take care of anger. We don’t suppress or hate it, or run away from it. We just breathe gently and cradle our anger in our arms with the utmost tenderness."
In other words, let yourself be angry and let others be angry! Trying to control your anger or control others will likely always just lead to more anger and suffering.
Thanks again for such an insightful post!
